So yesterday morning I turned in a final set of minor edits on Changeling’s Fealty to the Agent.
Most of it was minor things – adding a few more references to landmarks in Calgary to the book that locals will recognize. Some snarking at the Calgary Tower (totally inevitable. It’s a ‘landmark free standing tower’… thats shorter than many of our office buildings)
The other included edit was explanations of a few things. It is very easy, when writing, to just have something happen because you know why its happening, without explaining things.
I was reminded, reading my reader’s comments this time around, of a conversation a few years back when another first reader was going over Children of the Twain.
She told me that something didn’t make sense. She didn’t see why the bad guy would have any reason to help out another bad guy. I gave her the whole explanation of why it made sense, what was going on and why he couldn’t not help the other guy.
Her response was very simple.
“That’s great. Now PUT IT IN THE BOOK”
It’s a good mantra to remember.
