So, with Changeling’s Fealty finalized and in the agent’s capable hands, thoughts are tumbling through my head on the sequel, tentatively titled either Changeling’s Duty or Changeling’s Oath… still working on a name :-p
Historically I don’t have a good track record with sequels. The second ONSET book languishes at about 10,000 words and an outline. The one to my alternate history space opera (first novel I ever finished, honestly pretty unpublishable XD) made is about the same. One attempted sequel literally has a longer outline than written text.
I’ve never actually finished a second book. The intent is to change this with Changeling 2, whatever it ends up being called (Changeling’s Mentor or Changeling’s Teacher are also on the list… like I said, still working).
A sequel requires a careful balance between explanation of the existing world and what has already happened, with not boring the people who read the first book with details they already know. I need to explain the world laid out in Changeling, one of Fae and Shifters and Mages, without repeating myself (copy-pasta is, well, lazy. And rude).
I intend to cheat a little bit by moving the location of the story across the country. By moving locations, I can re-explain much of the structure of the supernatural world in Changeling without resorting to “As you know, Bob, alll Fae are…” sort of explanation.
No goals for writing at the moment, other than ‘name the book and start it by the end of April.’ Sadly, day job and school are currently eating my life and leaving me with neither the time nor the energy to write much (and the brain switch from ‘corporate amalgamation’ to ‘urban fantasy Changeling snarky hero’ is… mindwrenching).
Namaste all,
Glynn
