YOU CAN NEVER GO HOME
When accusations of piracy and mass murder are laid against his homeworld, Damien Montgomery is sent to resolve the crisis.
As counter-accusations fly and an old flame re-enters his life, the newest Hand of the Mage-King of Mars finds himself in the midst of a bloody interstellar shadow war. With the death toll mounting, Damien must decide whether he should trust the world he came from – or the world that asked for his help.
The wrong choice will trigger a civil war that could shatter human civilization.
No pressure.
Voice of Mars is book 3 of the Starship’s Mage series

Keep up the good work! Love this series!
I know as a hand, Damien is powerful, but I would like to see him more powerful. I hate seeing my favorite characters struggling!
Thanks!

I sympathize with your feelings James, but feel like that fact that Damien still has to struggle maintains his human aspect. While it is hard to see a favorite character struggling I feel it’s better for both the reader and writer. After all, if Damien could just wave a hand and make it all the way he wanted it to be it’s going to cut down on story lines. It will end with another character driven to angst over the moral quandary of what the right thing is vs what can be do. It will also put Damien in the position of being just another all powerful, overbearing presence that the UnArcana worlds are against in the first place. Damien seems to be filling a gap that the Mage-King and his other Hands can’t.
That’s my opinion anyway. I haven’t read Voice of Mars yet (it’s in my to be read queue) so I may be talking out of turn.

Sorry about the typos….
James Caplan says
Part of a writer’s dilemma with powerful characters is that once they become truly invincible it becomes harder to build suspense. So, they think they have to create external limitations or constraints. Remember Ender? In the later books he was placed in exile, unable to use his powers. Likewise Alvin Maker. OSC painted himself into a corner with both heroes.
That said, I’d love to see Damien get more powerful, too. The idea that a hero has to have limits is comic book thinking. The more creative author lets the reader go with the hero as he or she figures a clever way to win. I much prefer the success story to horror tropes.

I have signed a contract with Tantor Media for an audiobook version of Voice of Mars. I’m not certain of the planned release date as yet, but based on earlier projects I would guess sometime in June.

GREAT NEWS,!
I trust that the entire series will be audio booked?
Michael Smitb says
Mention of the even. So excited I forgot how to spell apparently!
Glynn Stewart says
That is the plan, but currently I’m contracting on a book-by-book basis as I don’t have a long enough track record to really want to sell books I haven’t written yet 🙂
Michael Smitb says
As long as we get along the books written by so far!
I have three audible credits with your name on them!

Went on to goodreads to add Omnibus and Hand of Mars to the “read” section of my list instead of “to read”. Imagine my joy at seeing a new addition to the Starship’s Mage series…. well, it was shortlived, since i now hafto wait until summer for the audio book, if your estimation is correct :p
With that self-pitying out of the way, thank you for your fantastic work. I love the Starship’s Mage series. and i’m really looking forward to the audiobook 😀
