Something I didn’t draw too much attention to last year for a lot of reasons was my transition from writing part-time to writing full-time. It was a careful thing, done in stages, carried out with the full support of my then-boss.
And it started September 1, 2015. As I think most people reading this blog can guess, it went well enough that most of those stages got jumped over and I was no longer even working part-time by the end of 2015.
Since September 2015, I have launched five novels (with the sixth, Alien Arcana coming out shortly), closed seven audiobook deals, been in a novella anthology (Experiments and Enchantments, which I don’t believe is available any longer), set up as a micro-press (Faolan’s Pen Publishing Inc), moved provinces from Alberta to Ontario, and generally been very, very, very busy.
It’s been a mind-boggling year in a lot of ways. It still hasn’t really sunk in that I get to write for a living.
I have plans going forward, though currently I’m going to stay very vague on release dates. If everything comes together as planned, we should have four more novels (including Alien Arcana, obviously) out this year O_o, including launching an urban fantasy thriller series that I hope you all will love!
So thank you all.
Without you, this would never have happened.
Happy reading!

So far I have been completely enthralled by every book you’ve put out. The the SM series is my favorite. That being said DoT could eclipse it. Excellent world to start a series on. The moral dilemma of being a conquered race by aliens who aren’t actually that bad and are a much better option than the “other guys” is one I haven’t really seen done. To resist the people who own your planet or stick with them as the lesser of two evils?
Glad to see you delving into urban fantasy. Its one of my very favorite categories as it can blend so many things together. (All the standard supernatural creatures along with modern technology etc.)
Well just thought I as a random reader would say that you writing full time is the best choice for the likes of me. Wasting talent on a random Cube based job is not good for creative people. Aaaad now i’m going to sit back and check your page every day until Alien Arcana is out lol.

I have to say, it sounds like you had a very busy year. That being said, I happen to come across Starship’s Mage by accident. I’m an avid reader in the sci-fi/fantasy genre and I was looking for something to read in my down time that I haven’t read before. Mind you my Kindle has over 200+ books and I have countless hardback and paperback books that I’ve read. I am rather picky when it comes to authors on how they portray the story. I checked out the reviews and read the synopsis that was posted on Amazon.com. It reminded me of a series by Melissa Scott, The Roads of Heaven, where ships traveled by the use of magic which was one of my favorite series. I downloaded the first book and was hooked. I quickly got the Hand of Mars and the Voice of Mars and devoured him within a couple days. Not an easy feat to do when you go to school full-time and work full-time. After I read them through, I went through and reread them again to get some more understanding and to see if I could understand or see the actual story arcs. I can see from the first novel to the last novel not only the growth of Darien, but also the growth of you as a writer. The first book didn’t explain a lot of the back story, but both the second and the third brought to light to more of the situation that Darien had found himself in and also showed more complexity that can be found in more experience writers. I thoroughly enjoyed the series and I am waiting anxiously for Alien Arcana to come out and also hoping to see this series explode. I myself as a novice writer can see so many different ways that this whole world that you created can go. AWESOME JOB!
As for you going from part-time writer to full-time writer, I have to say congratulations. This is something that I myself would like to do and seeing that other people can do it makes it that much more attainable for myself. Thank you for the entertainment of the novels and I hope to read much more.

I came across Starships Mage by accident and it has quickly shot up to the top of my list of favorite books. I don’t know if you will have more books that take place in the universe you have created, but I sure hope so. For me as I read and listened to the books while driving it was like watching an awesome sci-fi/fantasy movie or TV show in my mind. These definitely would be great for that I think.
Thank you for creating such wonderful books. I know it may seem trivial to read messages from people speaking of your books and that I haven’t really said much. Even though I may not have written a page to properly express how much I have enjoyed the Starships Mage series. I hope it shows when I say that this is the first time I’ve looked for an authors post in order to express it. I find very few books that I enjoy so much that I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I’m not great at responding to the various emails and comments I get, but I try, and I really do appreciate all of the kind words from people who love my work.
There’s a quote I’m 90% certain I’ve found the correct attribution for that sums it up for me:
“If you love a book, never hesitate to tell the author. Your email might just arrive on a day they feel like giving up on writing.”

Thanks guys!

I’m very happy to read, both for your sake and mine, that you will be able to commit to writing full time. You are a terrific writer and I will reap the benefits of your increased production. I’ve read them all to date and look forward to reading many more in the future.

Can’t wait for the next book, just re-read the series yet again and its up in my top 5 for series I can’t wait for the next book for. Along with Kel Kades work and Patrick Roffuss. Yes, I made the Patrick comparison. As said above I can really feel the potential for this series and really look forward to where you take us next 🙂
Any hint on if September is still looking good for the next book?
